Igniting the spark of genius in every child

Welcome to Paradise Place Preschool

A beloved initiative of the UCC community, located conveniently across the street and dedicated to serving the families of Crested Butte. Since our beginnings in the back room of UCC in 1988, we have grown to become a nurturing and educational space that supports children and their families. In 2001, we proudly moved to our current building on UCC-owned land, thanks to the generosity and hard work of our community members.

In an environment rooted in respect and compassion, we strive to nourish each child's spirit and provide a protective space for him or her to grow.

Feel The Difference

At Paradise Place Preschool, we are more than just a daycare in the mountains; we offer an adventure-based learning environment that inspires curiosity and fosters a love for exploration. Our curriculum, guided by Montessori principles, emphasizes outdoor learning and hands-on experiences, allowing children aged 1 to 5 years to connect with nature and engage in meaningful play every day.

  1. Experiential Learning

We help children connect with their surroundings in new ways, so they discover what is meaningful to them in the moment and in the future.

  2. Community

A child’s educational success in large part depends on families, educators, peers and relevant members of the community.

  3. Collaboration

Sharing new experiences and solving problems with others leads to a greater sense of connectedness – as well as meaningful learning experiences.

  4. Proven Models

Several important learning models have been developed by educators around the world. The human connection must be a key component of learning.

Lorena

Hi! My name is Lorena and I’m originally from Colombia. I arrived in the United States more than three years ago and I can define my immigration story in two words: love and effort. When I arrived here I didn’t speak English at all and I had to do unskilled jobs to live; but at one point in my life here I decided that I had to learn the language to be able to adapt to this culture and integrate into society. I made a great effort to learn the language and at the same time I began my studies in Early Childhood through a scholarship that I won at the Mesa Colorado University.

After many hours of studying and dedication I got my degree in Child Development Bilingual Early Childhood Education in October 2024 and since then I have worked as Director of Paradise Place Preschool.
I currently alternate my work in Paradise with teaching Spanish to the children of the Gunnison Elementary School and at the same time I am taking a bachelor’s degree in education in my alma mater.

I really enjoy my life in this beautiful town, where I have been able to find warmth and respect in all the people I have surrounded myself with; I feel gratitude and love for CB and I would like to continue growing professionally in this place next to my husband and my children, who are the soul of my life.

Hello! My name is Karen Morgan, and I am passionate about fostering a nurturing and enriching environment at Paradise Place Preschool, where I manage the administrative tasks. As a dedicated professional, I work tirelessly to ensure that our school operates smoothly and efficiently, providing a supportive space for both staff and families.

My love for Paradise Place runs deep, as it is not just where I work, but also where my daughter experiences joyful learning and growth.

It’s incredibly rewarding to see her and her peers thrive in an environment that prioritizes creativity, exploration, and community.

I am committed to maintaining the high standards and positive culture that make our school a beloved part of the community.

Kara

My name is Kara but most people call me KiKi. My husband and I have lived in the valley for over 30 years collectively! I am a mom of two boys that both attend Paradise and I own a photography company and am an early childhood art educator.

I have always been inspired by art and photography and received a BFA in Studio arts and Photography and a BA in Alternative Art Processes and Spanish. Art is apart of our everyday life at my house and my boys love exploring the world and our epic backcountry while being inspired by the art and activities we do together.

I decided to transfer this fun educational tool of learning about the world through art over to the school and have been teaching weekly art classes geared towards each age group. I love seeing all of the different ways the kids express themselves and believe art is an important foundation to keeping your creativity and playfulness in life.

Hilda

My name is Hilda Serrano, and I’m originally from Gunnison, Colorado. I grew up there with my sister until my family moved to Mexico, where I spent 11 years learning Spanish. In 2016, I returned to Gunnison, attended high school, and began working at CBMR, where I met my current manager. She introduced me to childcare, and I fell in love with it while babysitting her son, Patrick. Even before that, I enjoyed caring for children in Mexico, helping my mom look after our neighbors’ kids.

I’m thrilled to join Paradise Preschool, getting to know the children, bringing them joy, and supporting my peers. I’ve also started my early childhood education journey and am eager to learn and grow. Outside of work, I love traveling, going to concerts with my sister, skiing, doing makeup, listening to music, and staying active at the gym. Thank you for trusting me with your children—I look forward to making fun and meaningful memories with them!

Jemletta

At my preschool graduation, I walked with a lit candle, singing, “I am who I am, I am what I am, and I like me.” Growing up in Telluride, Colorado, I was often asked if I liked being adopted. To me, it was simply my life—I had a brother, a mom, a dad, and a world filled with music, dance, soccer, and exploring nature with friends. From an early age, I felt a deep sense of purpose.

My journey in education began at a daycare, where I knew nothing about onesies or diaper changes. Since then, I have grown in both knowledge and skill, gaining insight into what makes a school truly high-quality. Earning my Level 4 in PDIS in early 2023 was a milestone, but I know learning never stops. Classes at Red Rocks Community College, pyramid trainings, Spanish school, and observation hours in Guatemala have all shaped my perspective.

I strive to be a positive influence, fostering independence and creating a safe space for students to grow. Language and borders do not divide us—we are here for our students, just as my own teachers saw and nurtured the qualities in me: observant, thoughtful, kind, and fair.

Malaurie

Hello! My name is Malaurie Reeves. I recently moved up to Colorado from Tennessee . Back home I lived in a very big household with all my siblings, nieces and grandmother.

Up here it’s just me, my fiancé, and our pups. I don’t think I ever would have become a teacher back home, but moving away allowed me to learn so much about myself and what truly makes me happy. A big part of that is teaching and making the kids eager to learn and explore the world more, And being someone they can rely on.

Happy to be here at Paradise!

Rocio

My name is Rocio Ceron, and for the past two years, I have been honored to be part of the Paradise Place Preschool community as a teacher—a role that fills me with gratitude and pride.
I cherish the warmth of the parents and the joy of working with children, witnessing their curiosity, creativity, and boundless energy. Immersing myself in their world is a privilege.

Recently, I became certified in early childhood education as a Montessori teacher and continue to deepen my knowledge of this method, which fosters socialization, respect, and solidarity.
Originally from Colombia, I spent 13 years volunteering as a Sunday school teacher for children and adolescents in Christian churches in my hometown, Santa Marta. My background is in public administration, and I have worked primarily in the textile industry as an expert consultant in textile technology.

I have been happily married for 21 years and have a wonderful teenage son. My family and I love living in Colorado, embracing both its opportunities and challenges. It is a gift to witness a child’s journey into adulthood, guided by the wisdom within.
